And, the emotions in the dressing room of Pakistan seem hard to contain as the team celebrates winning their first victory in the last 2 years. They had played about 12 matches to enjoy this sweet result.
Pakistan scored a 264 in the first innings with Kamran Akmal top scoring at 70. New Zealand sadly went off packing for a paltry 99 runs and Pakistan gave them 403 as target to win after scoring 239 in their second innings. Before weather played spoilsport Pakistan could skittle 7 kiwi wickets to give Pakistan the winning joy. The final session had been even more interesting when Pakistan had 15 overs to take the last 4 kiwi wickets. Daniesh Kaneira pitched in at this point to take McCullum and Tuffey’s wickets. They bowled New Zealand for 263 where Ross Taylor’s contribution was 97. Mohammed Asif had been the pick of the bowlers taking 5 for 67 and Kaneria took 3 for 74. Ross Taylor’s resilience and resistance didn’t pay off and the hosts succumbed to some good seam bowling from the Pakistan which included Asif supported by Mohammad Aamer who has been living up to the expectations built around his bowling. He has been par excellent so far with his test match bowling.
Pakistan looked to have done on their homework and they seem to be improving on the bowling front. As both teams head to McLean Park, Napier it should be a match that deserves a look-forward-to treatment from test cricket fans as Pakistan looks to continue their domination against the resilient New Zealand.
New Zealand though is not a team that will give up easily and will look forward to avoid defeat in the hands of visitors. They should play an attacking game from the beginning to hope against the hope and stand a chance to win the series.
